'The Sidecar' - A Newsletter for Bikers
March 14, 2008
What We’re Up To:
The weather couldn’t be
better for riding right now. Even the occasional sprinkle isn’t holding
anybody back. One thing that is holding some of us back is the Flu.
Snakebite has had her share of that nasty beast and we have been hearing a
lot that some are feeling their ‘hair’ hurt (among other things) for up to
four weeks. Sounds like its kicking people pretty hard so we’ll keep knockin'
on wood and ‘Riding the Desert Wind’ as much as possible while spring is in
the air.
There are plenty of rides and events in the upcoming weeks that are already posted on the calendars. There’s also getting those taxes ready for Uncle Sam and figuring out how to spend that tax rebate that ‘maybe’ everyone will get. Some have been saying that they could use the cash to pay their taxes. Now that’s ironic don’t you think? The spring equinox is on March 20 (starting the slide to summer) and on that same day is the ‘Luncheon on the Lawn’. Last but certainly not least, Arizona Bike Week begins on March 29th. Then there is always the daily work drudge. So, we think just about everybody has a busy schedule to ‘Git er Done’ so we can free up our time to ride!
‘It's the
action, not the fruit of the action, that's important… You may never know
what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no
result.’

City Considers Motorcycle
Safety Awareness Campaign – Glendale, Arizona
By Elizabeth Jackman
In
response to more than 70 letters he has received from concerned
motorcyclists, Cactus district councilmember Phil Lieberman would like to
see the city implement a motorcycle safety awareness sign campaign.
-
’A year ago, in a seven-week
period, we lost three motorcyclists in this city,’ said Lieberman who was a
motorcycle dealer on
Glendale Avenue for 22
years and still rides them. ‘I am in favor of Glendale being a leader in a
motorcycle safety program, I would like to see us be the first in the
state.’ During a council workshop last Tuesday afternoon, transportation
Director Jamsheed Mehta said that the fatality rate of motorcycle crashes
continued to rise for the ninth year in a row.
Information presented to council stated that studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) attribute these alarming statistics to several factors including an all-time high number of registered motorcycles, lack of rider experience or training, lax helmet laws in several states including Arizona, more congested roadways, high blood-alcohol content among a vast majority of riders involved in crashes and inexperienced an inattentive motorists. ‘The single highest cause of motorcycle related crashes is the inattentive motor vehicle driver,’ Mehta said. ‘Nearly two-thirds of all vehicle-motorcycle crashes are caused by the vehicle driver.’
Barrel district councilmember Yvonne Knaack who is an insurance agent said most of the motorcyclists she insures who have accidents are caused by cars. ‘I believe we need more education,’ she said. Vice Mayor Manny Martinez said he considered himself a safe driver but had a scary incident years ago near the capital area when he nearly hit a motorcycle. ‘I think we could put safety literature in the Glendale Connection,’ Martinez said adding that he felt a helmet law would also help.
Yucca district councilmember Joyce Clark had concerns about the costs of the program. ‘Where would the signs be placed and how many? This needs a more complete analysis and costing,’ Mayor Elaine Scruggs said. ‘I believe funding could come from GO (Glendale Onboard) who have an education component. A request should be given to CTOC (Citizen’s Transportation Oversight Committee) for their consideration.’
Lieberman felt it would be a positive step forward and said he would sit in on CTOC meetings to explain the safety program.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Peters Unveils Legislation to Help States
Target Motorcycle Helmet Use
PressMediaWire WASHINGTON, D.C. Thursday, February 14, 2008
U.S. Transportation
Secretary Mary E. Peters today sent legislation to Congress seeking greater
flexibility for states to target one of the leading causes of motorcycle
deaths across the nation – riding without a helmet.
An avid motorcyclist, she credits her helmet and riding gear for saving her
life during a 2005 motorcycle crash.
’My helmet prevented me from being a brain injury patient when I crashed my
Harley two years ago,’ Secretary Peters said. ‘We know helmets save lives
and I want states to be able to join in urging riders to take personal
responsibility for their safety by wearing a helmet every time they ride.’
The legislation submitted to Congress would allow states to use federal
motorcycle safety funding to promote the use of motorcycle helmets.
Currently, states are limited to using the funds for motorcycle safety
training and awareness programs only.
Secretary Peters noted that states need additional resources to combat a
sharp increase in motorcycle fatalities. In 2006, motorcycle fatalities
reached 4,810, an increase of 127 percent since 1997, Secretary said. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that
motorcycle helmets not only saved the lives of 1,658 motorcyclists in 2006,
but that 752 additional lives could have been saved if all motorcyclists had
worn helmets, she added.
Calling motorcycles ‘our nation’s greatest highway safety challenge,’
Secretary Peters launched a comprehensive federal initiative to improve
motorcycle safety in October 2007. The action plan emphasizes more rider
education and training, tougher standards for helmet certification labeling,
law enforcement training, and road designs that consider motorcycle
dynamics.

Arizona
Vehicle Enthusiasts – Top Secret
A couple of weeks ago we were sent the following ‘highest-priority’
top-secret info. Unfortunately it was impossible to pass on through our
newsletter cuz, it is so cool and we didn’t want to take a chance of blowing
the surprise. On Sunday, March 2nd a charity car show was held
that featured a secret surprise unveiling a 1968 Camaro restored by a
volunteer crew of Arizona car clubs, hobby-related businesses and many
individual hobbyists on behalf of ‘Project Iraqi Veteran’ or PIV.
PIV was organized in response to the needs of a local US Marine named
Corporal Jared Foster. During the Iraqi war, 24-year-old Corporal Foster
took a round in his back, effectively blowing him apart. Miraculously, after
months in a coma and many surgeries later, Corporal Foster returned to
Arizona
as a permanently disabled war veteran.
Once home, and barely back on his feet, he returned to restoring his 1968
Camaro. Unfortunately, his wounds made that extremely difficult, and when
members of the
Arizona
1st Generation Camaro Club heard of his situation, they decided to see what
they could do to help out this deserving car-guy.
That's when ‘Project Iraqi Veteran’ or PIV was organized as a tax-deductable
non-profit entity in Oct. 2007, and since then, they have worked with the
Cactus GTO Club and many other individuals and business' to completely
restore Jared's Camaro in total secrecy.
They planned a surprise presentation of the car to Jared at last Sundays
show. Jared thought his unrestored Camaro has been in storage at a shop
since last fall, awaiting some repair work that he was told will take the
back-logged shop about 6-months just to get around to doing.
If you’re a car enthusiast support the troops in any way we hope you heard
about the PIV Charity Show and Shine festivities. The presentation of the
car to him was around 2pm and covered by the media.
PART OF WHAT WAS IN OUR MAIL ORIGINALLY - ‘Please forward this e-mail
to all of your friends and fellow hobbyists, but also keep in mind that
Corporal Jared Foster doesn't know anything at all about the restoration or
presentation, and hopefully he won't find out until the surprise
presentation on March 2nd. Loose lip's (and e-mails) sink surprises. So
please be very discrete in promoting this very special and very secret event
in Arizona's hobby history.’

MIA Project – (Missing in America)
The initial focus of the
MIA Project will be a massive, nation-wide effort to locate, identify and
inter the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans. This task will be
executed through the combined, cooperative efforts of members of the
American Legion, other volunteer service and veteran organizations, local
Funeral Homes, State Funeral Commissions, State and National Veterans
Administration Agencies, and the State and National Veterans Cemetery
Administrations. Local, state and national laws must be followed in the
identification, claiming process and proper interment of the unclaimed
remains of forgotten veterans.
This will be a lengthy project and will require many man-hours to ensure
that we have done our utmost to discover every forgotten veteran and procure
each a dignified resting place. This will also be a labor of love, a task of
redemption, for a debt of service that can never be repaid.
The second phase of the MIA Project will be the creation of a network of
individuals working with local Funeral Homes, State, and National Agencies
to ensure that, from now on, the cremated remains of any unclaimed veteran
will be identified, claimed and interred in a timely manner. This will be an
ongoing project and will most likely be a cooperative effort between many
voluntary service organizations.
The MIA Project will be a long-term project, but not a time sensitive
project.
Total Funeral Homes Visited - 219 Cremains Found - 4664
Veterans Cremains Identified - 107 Veterans Interred - 101
3500 of these Cremains were found in one institution.

Harley Recall
The Harley-Davidson motorcycle company is recalling 5,947 2005 to 2007 FLHP, FLHPI, FLHTP, FLHTPI, FLHPE AND FLHPEI Police and Escort motorcycles equipped with anti-lock brake systems.
‘Inconsistencies in the routing of the brake lines can cause abrasion of the lines and hoses,’ according to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration. ‘This condition has caused brake fluid leaks,’ according to NHTSA. The safety agency reported on its web site that ‘loss of brake fluid could lead to loss of brake function, which could lead to a crash resulting in injury or death.’
Harley-Davidson dealers will inspect and replace brake lines on the motorcycles ‘if necessary,’ NHTSA reported. ‘Brake line retention and clutch cable position devices will also be installed to prevent future abrasion to the brake lines,’ the agency said.
The Harley-Davidson recall is expected to begin ‘on or about March 10, 2008,’ according to NHTSA. Owners may contact the motorcycle company at 1-414-342-4680 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

Wearing Only A WIG When
Riding
Are you ready for this one????
That's right; you may eventually wear only a WIG when riding; however, the helmetless crowd won't be happy because, in this case, WIG stands for ‘Wireless Impact Guardian’. The WIG, created by UMass Amherst Engineering student Brycen Spencer, is a safety helmet that signals for help, even when the wearer is unconscious.
‘The WIG will be activated when it is buckled on,’ says Spencer. ‘If you fall and hit your head, the helmet will detect that and beep for a minute or so. If you don't turn it off, WIG sends for help, either directly to 911 or to a third-party service that relays the emergency call to 911. Included with the message will be a GPS location giving your geographical coordinates so the emergency team knows precisely where you are.’
The ‘inner workings for his helmet, (include) an accelerometer to detect any impact that exceeds a predetermined safety level and a communications device to provide the user's location for rescue crews. All the electronics are small and relatively inexpensive, allowing them to fit in the current helmet configuration with little physical modification or increase in overall helmet price.’

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 1, 2008
The American Motorcycle
Association (AMA) seeks support for bill to end health insurance
discrimination against motorcyclists.
The American Motorcyclist
Association announced today that more than 100 members of the U.S. House of
Representatives have co-sponsored a bill that would end health insurance
discrimination against motorcyclists and others who participate in legal
recreational activities or use their motorcycles for transportation.
While the action is significant, there is still much work to be done, according to AMA Vice President for Government Relations Edward Moreland.
‘The AMA is calling on motorcyclists and others who face health insurance discrimination to urge their Representatives to support H.R. 1076, known as the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act,’ said Moreland. ‘Time is short. The bill has broad bi-partisan support but we need 218 votes for passage. If we don't act by April, we will likely miss our chance for legislative action in 2008.’
Health insurance discrimination can have a devastating financial effect on families and has been the focus of efforts by the AMA and other groups for many years. Following the passage of the original HIPAA legislation in 2001, bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services created a loophole that allowed insurance companies to deny benefits to people who are injured while participating in legal recreational activities, such as riding motorcycles or off-road vehicles, horseback riding, skiing, and other activities. H.R. 1076 will close that loophole.
Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) has worked diligently to get H.R. 1076 passed. ‘Laws like HIPAA are passed to protect people,’ he said. ‘Sometimes they have unintended consequences. When this happens, Congress has an obligation to fix the loopholes and that's what this bill does.’
‘No one should be denied health coverage for no reason other than they enjoy snowmobiles, motorcycles or other recreational activities,’ said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the lead Democrat sponsoring the bill. ‘This legislation would enforce the original intent of Congress and ensure recreational enthusiasts are not discriminated against.’
In the last Congress, the U.S. Senate passed a companion bill by unanimous consent, but the bigger challenge has been getting legislation approved in the House. ‘We now have 101 co-sponsors for this legislation in the House, which is an important milestone,’ said Moreland. ‘But to reach 218 votes and get H.R. 1076 passed, immediate grassroots action is crucial, especially since House members are returning to their districts soon to campaign for the fall election.’
U.S. Representatives can quickly and easily be contacted by going to the AMA Rapid Response Center at www.AMADirectlink.com.

On The Lighter Side (But Not)
How Our News Is Distorted
A biker is riding by the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents. The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.
A reporter has seen the whole scene, and addressing the biker, says ‘Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life.’ ‘Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.’
I noticed a patch on your jacket said the journalist. ‘Yeah I ride with a Christian motorcycle club’ the biker replies.
‘Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, you know, and tomorrow's papers will have this on the first page. What motorcycle do you ride?’ A Harley Davidson. The journalist leaves.
The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on first page:
BIKER GANG MEMBER ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH.
An excellent example of how our ‘news?’ is distorted!!
